Three hours later on the dot, and so many changes in direction and reroutes I wasnât sure if Iâd even remember the way, we pulled into a warehouse district.
A couple of buildings were clearly operational businesses. We passed them by, and I took note of the names. The lot was a maze of brick and concrete buildings of varying sizes. Streetlights glowed on the main drag, but the smaller roads relied on individual buildingsâ lights.
We turned right. There was a small building on the narrower road that looked a little like an office block. No lights shone from it. We slowed as we passed it, then Michaels finally pulled alongside it before driving towards the rear and turning into an alleyway of sorts.
A concrete warehouse loomed at our side. Just two storeys high, and beyond the large square footage, there was nothing about it that indicated this was a place weâd be visiting.
But stop we did.
Michaels pulled into the building through a large garage door. The open space was like a plane hangar. He drove close to the outside wall, reaching another exit onto the street, where he pulled up and turned off the engine.
As we stepped out of the car, the garage doors sealed closed.
Before weâd left the academy, Michaels had instructed us to leave our phones in our rooms. So, empty-handed, feeling a little naked without my phone or even a service weaponâsomething we wouldnât be issued until we were on official assignmentâI climbed out and followed Michaels to the back of the large space.
I watched in fascination as he punched in a code. A small flap opened, revealing a retina scanner.
âHoly shit, thatâs next-gen tech.â Awe had Smythe angling around to see better.
An amused snort escaped Michaels. âAnd youâre about to meet the man who designed it.â
âMathew Lucas?â An honest-to-God gasp fell from his mouth.
Iâd spoken to Lucas a couple of times. Thatch had arranged the calls after seeing potential in me, figuring me as a good fit for the ITU.
The vampire was old, as in well over a hundred. And from the way Thatch told it, he was super smart and just as deadly.
While I hadnât met Lucas in the flesh, the two calls weâd exchanged had pretty much solidified that about him.
We entered a small concrete room. The light was already on. It was nondescript and void of, well, anything, beyond a second door. Another code, this one different, judging from the movement of Michaelsâs arm, and a room that I expected was Smytheâs fantasy brought to life filled my vision.
âHoly fucking Batman lair.â
Lucas stood from behind a gigantic desk, which looked like a high-tech spacecraft hub. He chuckled, the sound rich and warm. âWithout the dankness and flying rodents.â He stepped towards us, hand outstretched. âGood to finally meet you.â
I shook his hand, an eager, slightly unhinged smile tilting my lips high. âYou too. This place is incredible.â
He gave a slight, almost bashful tilt of his head. âAnd completely mine.â
I bobbed my head in understanding.
